@ Nate,

Yeah I am the same way. Being in large groups doesn't really stress me out either. But when I am stressed, I usually prefer not to be in them.

Interesting read. I am an introverted too and like you, prefer smaller groups. I don't necessarily get stressed in large groups I just like deeper relationships over light and fluffy ones.

I like your fight-or-flight way of explaining it. Makes sense. You may remember, I posted on stress a while back: http://www.truefitnessfanatic.com/health/stress-relief/

Yeah the ab wheel definitely burns when you do it right. I used to think it was kind of a joke before I started doing it correctly.

Killer write up Alykhan-

Have to admit I always dismissed the ab wheel as a toy - that was until I was challenged to do 2 sets of 15 reps on it - never felt such a burn!

@ Jonathan,

I agree it takes time. It's very easy to underestimate calorie intake. I am usually very conservative with my estimates, so if anything I'll tend to overestimate.

People may be calculating this the wrong way. Often, they underestimate how much they eat. It's something that takes time to get right.

This is sound advice.

@ Kelly,

It's kind of crazy that parents these days actually need to enforce physical activity, but it's great that you are taking responsibility for your kids' well-being. I guess that's just the society we live in today.

@ Anna,

I agree that there is no reason for teens to be obese at such a young age. They should be out and about burning plenty of calories, but unfortunately that's not the case. We can only hope the trend does not continue because on top of the immediate effects of teen obesity, there are also much more severe consequences a few years down the road.

Hey Alykhan, it is sad to know that a lot of teenagers are getting overweight. At this stage, there are still growing so there should not be a reason to be obese at this age. But, you're right that the solution remains that same as those for adults.

Parents definitely need to be more conscious of what they feed their kids and get educated on this topic. Nutrition not only affects their children's health but also their energy levels and academic performance.

I'm glad you bring awareness to this topic with this post.

Alykhan,
As a parent today, it is a constant struggle to balance my kids time playing video games and playing real sports. We only allow them to play video games a certain amount of time each day and they have to play at least one sport all the time, soccer, basketball, and running are what they are in to now.

I have recently started doing stability ball exercises and I agree they are great for the core because they incorporate the added dimension of balance work.

Hi,

I think a stability ball is also worthwhile. It can help you do a lot of core exercises and it is inexpensive.

@ Srdjan,

I can also see the difference between now and when I was growing up. I agree that technology has a lot to do with it. Youngsters still have more opportunities to be active than adults, though, so hopefully the trend doesn't continue.

@ Niko,

Good point. I know I was definitely more active as a kid because my dad got me into soccer. Adults need to shoulder a lot of the responsibility, especially for younger children.

Alykhan,

As a father of 2 young boys I can see the influence my training and way of life has on them. Whilst all my oldest boys friends now have their own Nintendo DS consoles, my boys are more interested in getting outside and running around and bike riding. It's usually no surprise to see overweight adults have overweight children, parents are the biggest influence in their children's lives during their formative years. As adults we need to pick up our act and in turn it will flow onto our children.

It's really sad to see this. Things were so different when I was a teenager (wasn't THAT long ago) and I can see this difference as I observe my younger sibling. I think the rise of technology has played a big role in all of this.

I agree, you can't just rely solely on diet or solely on exercise. For the best results, you need to combine both. Thanks for stopping by!

Sweet potatoes are a fantastic thing to eat if you are trying to lose a bit of weight. They are low on the Glycemic Index which makes them a better choice than regular potatoes. Foods low on the Glycemic Index (or GI for short) are excellent choices as they do not create highs and crashes in blood sugars which can make you reach for the snacks! Of course, eating a low GI diet will help with weight loss, but if you are looking to create a figure like Matthew's then all the sweet potatoes in the world won't help without regular exercise!

@ Keith,

Yeah some people may not buy into it, but the guy with 8% bf and poor diet probably has better cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and health stats in general than the obese person who eats healthy.

Nice post, totally agree with the statement that a man with 8% bf and a bad diet is healthier than a man with 20% bf and a "good" diet.

Too many people think that you can just eat unlimited amounts of healthy food, and that's just plain wrong

@ Darrin,

A lot of it is on the parents. Unfortunately, here in Northeast Florida, some of the high school sports programs are getting cut also due to budget issues.

I definitely spent too much time sitting on my butt playing video games when I was a kid. I definitely agree that it's important to start kids with the habit of being active at a young age. Unfortunately with gym and recess being the first classes to get the axe in our society, it's probably getting more and more important for parents to push their kids to be more active.

@ Dave,

I read that study also. That's interesting because it seems there is a lot of focus on diet these days and less on people's fitness levels. I think that is about to shift though with things like MRT and HIIT becoming mainstream. With a heightened activity level, eating right really does become less of a worry.

Obesity is far too common these days. It's interesting that you mention body fat as a health indicator. I recently read a study that showed fitness level was actually more important than BMI when it came to death risk. In other words, it's more important for people to be active than to necessarily eat right and watch their weight.

Screw them for discouraging that two gained pounds. I would much rather have a stronger heart and two extra pounds of muscle than be two pounds lighter with less cardio and therefore a weaker heart comparatively.

Some of them are definitely a rip off. After all, these companies do need to turn a profit. I think in general, buying raw ingredients and making your own foods/drinks are cheaper and better for you.

There is definitely a component of "feel" to it. I went through a lot of trial and error before I figured out about how much I needed to be eating to maintain my weight.

I'm all for homemade pre and post recovery drinks. To put it simply most of the name brand supplements that contain a broad range of ingredients are really not worth the money you pay. Most of the ingredients are in such trace amounts, that they are actually of no benefit to you. I feel you are better of mixing it up yourself, using the raw ingredients, that way you know for sure what you are consuming.

People's calorie needs to maintain weight is different for everyone. While calories in vs calories out is a great formula for weight loss, fat loss is a whole different story. The only way to determine your calories is to keep a journal of all the food you eat and slowly increase you calories until you gain weight. It takes a lot of work, but once you find your maintenance calories, it makes it easy to lose weight.

Thanks man! No pics around the exact dates of the one year period, but the before and after pic on my about page is pretty close to what the difference was.

I also agree with Michael that they are great when they are mashed.
I personally using a great recipe that I have learned in the 31 Day Fat Loss Cure guide, I will try to share with you this recipe later...

@ Michael,

I think many people underestimate the amount of upper and lower body strength required to be a decent soccer player. You need to be able to jump and use your body to challenge for the ball and shield it. This is why a soccer player develops dense, compact muscle that suits his frame for functional strength as opposed to large, bulky muscles like bodybuilders.

Football/soccer players look really skinny in shirts which is quite deceiving because once they lift there top off you see they are actually quite muscly. I put myself in the same bracket lol, when I have a match and take my shirt off after, people are surprised how different I look out of the shirt

I actually like them post workout also. There aren't many healthier sources of carbs out there.

@ Dave,

Oh well, can't win them all. Reminds me about how I wish I liked avocados more since I'm always hearing good things about those!

This is great! I love sweet potatoes...I am Irish after all, so I'm genetically about 40% potato. I much prefer sweet potatoes to regular potatoes for all the reasons you mention - antioxidants, beta carotene, vitamin A and of course high in fiber. I love 'em post work out.

Yeah that's interesting. I've never eaten them raw before. I also read that Matthew Morrison uses a sweet potato only diet a couple of days before an event to get extremely lean.

I was reading through the comments and I must say I completely agree with what Dave has to say. Celebrities and athletes perform routines that are simply not feasible for the average person. But, at the same time, there are some extractable tips from every routine and every diet. Nice post!

I've always been a fan of sweet potatoes. I think I read once that one of the actors in the Twilight movies (I've never seen them so I can't tell you who) used to eat a raw sweet potato after his training. I don't know how effective this is but it just highlights how sweet potatoes are far superior to regular ones.

Great recipe!

Thanks Alykhan for the link/vid.

Also great post. Hanging Leg Raises and the ab wheel make for a killer combo for developing a perfect core.

Keep up the great work.

@ Mark,

I completely agree. Once you get into the habit, it feels very natural. When I eat frequently, I feel slow and sluggish. IF is so simple and effective which is why I love it.

Nice post, clarifying a lot of misconceptions!

I must say that my natural fat burning only got a real kick start once I learned about intermittent fasting from Rusty Moore.

I believe it's a very healthy, effective and actually very natural way of eating ... or not eating, in this case! ;-)

Thanks,

Mark

@ Dave,

Definitely! Sometimes, you'll see guys who don't do an ab-specific routine at all and still have ripped abs. This just goes to show that diet and overall exercise routine are the most important factors.

You're right, it doesn't take fancy equipment to build a great set of abs...in fact, diet and a fat burning exercise program are far more important than any actual exercises. To the extent you want to develop a better core, you can't go wrong with leg raises and the ab wheel...with some planks thrown in!

@ Sam,

I also really enjoyed the Abs Blueprint video series! Can't believe Rusty is giving that product away for free!

@ Darrin,

I've never tried pistol squats, but I'll check them out. I used to be anti-squats but now I do them regularly as part of a metabolic workout routine.

@ Jordan,

The ab wheel is great. I actually used to think it was useless until I started using proper technique. I'm sure there is a way to make a homemade ab wheel, but I don't know how... you can probably Google it basically all you need is some type of wheel and attach it to something you can grip like a rolling pin. They are pretty cheap though so I just bought one.

@ Niko,

Planks are also a great core exercise. I like to do a few sets of hanging leg raises followed by planks and then finish off with the ab wheel.

The ab wheel rocks. It's a great exercise to incorporate into a HIIT crossfit session. The other exercise I love is planking. I use planking to finish a lot of my workout, doing them both face down and on my sides.

I have never used the ab wheel, but it looks like it's worth a shot! I love hanging leg raises and recommend that most of my students try them. Is their anyway to make a home made ab wheel?

Cheers,

But where would we get our laughs if not for the ridiculous ab gizmo commercials? :-) I've grown quite fond of pistol squats, which are not only safer and just as effective as barbell squats, but also incorporates a static leg lift as well, which is a killer!

I have to admit that I'm also tired of seeing infomercials pitching lousy ab machines. The best exercises to get great abs is simple and just how you outlined it. Hanging leg raises are a killer exercises and is the best way to trigger those ab muscles.

I am also a big fan of the workouts in Abs Blueprint and the video series that is included in the follow up sequence is amazing as well.

@ Michael,

I've also been able to get away with eating more junk food lately since I've been doing a lot of HIIT + IF. I notice best results when I really try to eat clean, though.

@ Niko,

They certainly are under a lot of scrutiny, but a lot of them seem to really enjoy keeping in good shape and looking great which makes the process much easier. In a sense, it is something they have to do, but once they have that mindset, it becomes something they'd do whether or not they are in the spotlight.

@ Megan,

Yes, it's safe for anyone. I'd recommend not doing it more than once a week, though. Just so that it's easier to stick to long-term.

@ Keith,

Yeah I'm not sure if this is something that will ever go mainstream because it's not a diet which focuses on what to eat. Therefore, there is no way for companies in the food industry to spin it so that it will benefit them.

But I think #2 is going to be the hardest for people to try since it's the extreme opposite of everything else out there.

I know that celebs have more money, time and motivation to train, but can you imagine being under the amount of scrutiny that they are under. It would be a hard way to live your life, being judged everyday about how you look. Mind you the millions of dollars would make it easier to cope...lol

Britney is looking nice in 2011. But ye as Dave says celebs have lots of time to devote to working out. Currently I maintain at about 8-9% bodyfat on a 2 day workout schedule. Can't wait for xmas holidays when I have a month off of uni and can really push my workout volume. I have succesfully innovated a spin of lean gains, doing 14 hour fasts and seeing if they were effective at preventing fat gain while eating alot of junk food, has worked so far. Will do a post on that soon.

@howard- Are you from the UK mate, or you just support Man Utd from another country. I am a big Utd fan living in London, would be nice to know if there are any other guys in our niche from the UK.

@ Howard,

I believe people can get into good shape with a minimal time commitment. However, getting into amazing shape requires a higher training volume. I don't think there is any way around this. A lot of people may not care about being ripped, though, as long as they are lean and healthy

Hi

As you say celebrity bodies can be a great inspiration for people taking action and getting in shape. I know for me after watching the rocky films way back that was my motivation to start serious training. I just think people have to remember that to achieve the results they do celebrities have lots of time and resources plus huge motivation.

Cheers

ps Utd not playing well at the moment but hanging in there. We need a new midfielder so Rooney can get back up front again.

@ Debby,

You are always welcome! Dieting for women can be tricky because they usually need to eat way fewer calories than men. A man might be able to get away with 2,000 calories a day or more, but a woman might only need 1,200 or so. I think they need to focus more on calorie manipulation tactics such as intermittent fasting to keep their intake low and maintain a calorie deficit. I suggest reading my free report which you can access on my Facebook page for some ideas.

Diet and exercise are the important factors to have a healthy life. One cannot take it for granted. Yes there are great foods yet in every excess there is a certain risk. One should balance it. If maintaining your figure, sacrifice is the key.
I do hope you boys welcomes gals like me here. Do you have some diet features for us girls here as well? Might be curious on what men’s view on girl’s diet “schemes”.

@ Niko,

Thanks for reading. I also use intermittent fasting along with a combination of strength training and HIIT for fat loss. This is a winning formula if you stick with it.

@ Nate,

Haha yeah I didn't quite get the ones vs. tens thing either.

@ Dave,

I agree most celebrity routines aren't realistic for normal people. I still think that celebs can be incredible fitness role models, though. I was inspired to obtain a great physique by idolizing Cam Gigandet's appearance in Never Back Down. The volume of training is much higher for celebrities. Since regular people usually can't mimic this, they need to focus more on calorie restriction and tools like intermittent fasting.

I don't pay too much attention to celebrity workouts any more. I've come to the realization they have more time, more money, and less obligations than the average person. This combined with the fact that looking good is their job means they are highly motivated to get in great shape by exercising as much as possible and eating as healthy as possible, no matter what the cost. That being said, there are a few good tips to extract. In this case, don't overeat and watch out for liquid calories. Focus on higher quality foods. And get moving by doing something you enjoy.

Alykhan,
No body wants to be average. I think most guys realise that bodybuilding is not the way to achieve the look that women find most attractive. I find a combination of HIIT, Intermitent Fasting, Crossfit and Weight Training has put me in the best shape of my life, all at the age of 34. Chat soon.

@ Michael,

The reality evidence I have found is this: BCAAs have helped my muscles look fuller after fasted strength training than before when I didn't take them. I feel like I hold onto more of my gains while in a significant calorie deficit. Fasted training is the only time I use them and probably the only time I ever will. However, as Dave pointed out, Xtend came out with a new electrolyte-enhanced formula that I may begin to use as a sports drink for all HIIT type cardio. Just need to exhaust my current supply first!

@ Michael,

I did not gain anywhere near 34 lbs of muscle, nor did I intend to. I did gain about 5 lbs of muscle which was at the lower end of my goal, but I stopped before going any further because I found it harder to keep making gains without eating a constant calorie surplus and gaining some fat also which would compromise the lean look I always aim for.

The damage control stuff is good for occasional cheat days, but I found that if you really want to put on some mass, you need a constant calorie surplus and some of it will inevitably spill over into fat. So I ended up kind of nipping this experiment in the bud and now I try to stay under 140 at all times. It's interesting to go back and read this after almost a year, though.

Good luck on your case study. VI phase 1 is a great plan for putting on some mass without compromising the lean look.

@ Jack,

I honestly don't think I could live without meat. Lean meat is probably the best source of protein you can consume and it helps fill you up, so when combining it with veggies, you have an excellent meal.

@ Bryan,

The longer you keep it up, the easier it becomes.

@ Jordan,

I still estimate calories, but I find that when fasting regularly, it becomes much easier to hit my target while still enjoying cheat meals. So it really gives me peace of mind.

I see nearly all of you in our fitness niche use BCAA. Was wondering do you feel they actually work? When it comes to things like this, I like to look at the scientific evidence and also the reality evidence. Science can say all it wants but if I apply it and it doesn't work i toss it. So, yeah just curious to know whether you have experimented not using it and then gone back to using it and done a comparison to know if it truly works. I really do focus on nailing my basic diet down, and I don't take vitamins in my maintenance phase- make me go pee too much. I do take them when i push my body to extreme limits however.

Hey, how did this experiment wind up? did you end up gaining 34lbs of muscle in one month which i do find very hard to believe by the way. That is the thing with books, to sell them you have to sell a crazy idea and the lie just gets bigger, people don't want boring facts. But, yeah really curious to know if you gained a ton of muscle as he did. I have my little brother following Phase 1 of Visual Impact and he is doing great- I am doing a live case study of him- and I aim to post his 1st month results around the 5th of november. Check out his original stats http://www.somebodylied.com/live-case-study-build-muscle-lose-fat-part-1

My wife is my center when it comes to healthy eating. Whenever I stray she pulls me back in, or at least she tries..lol. She leans more toward the vegetarian side of things and I don't. That's where we have a conflict. At least what you laid out is doable for us meat eaters.
