A Blog Is the Best Fitness Resource

“Blogging is best learned by blogging… and by reading other bloggers.” – George Siemens

Why is a blog the best fitness resource?

I wanted to do a quick post on why you should read fitness blogs.  If your goal is to get fit, there are a million ways to do this.  There is so much information out there, that it’s easy to get overloaded.  This is especially true in the health and fitness industries where there are often contradicting views from experts.  When you have one fitness guru telling you one thing and another saying the complete opposite, it’s easy to get confused.  There are a couple of reasons why a blog is the best fitness resource.

Blogs are a great source of practical information.

Blogs are practical.

If you are searching for practical methods for getting lean, fitness blogs are a great place to start.  There are several reasons for this.  First, most bloggers are normal everyday people just like you. They simply want to help people by providing them with useful information.  Most of the time, they are not celebrities, professional athletes, or cover models.  Have you ever seen a stunning celebrity body, searched for their routine, and felt immediately discouraged once you realized that they had to devote several hours every day for months to achieve their look?  I know I have.

Celebrities and professional athletes often train for hours every day because this is their job.  Call me crazy, but I’m willing to bet that if you were to take an average Joe off the street, pay him millions of dollars, and give him access to all the resources he needed to get into great shape, he could easily do it.  For the record, I have nothing against celebrities and professional athletes.  In fact, many of them are fitness role models of mine.  I even write about their workout routines because I find them interesting and think that some of the information can be valuable.  However, I also know that I can’t follow their exact training methods because they’re just not practical.

Bloggers are easy to relate to.

When there are literally millions of ways to get into great shape, the key is to filter through the sea of fitness information and find the methods and tricks that work best for you.  Bloggers have used these methods and written about them.  If you want to learn how to build muscle without access to a gym, a blogger has done it and written about it.  If you want to learn how to perform a great workout in only 10 minutes, a blogger has done it and written about it.  If you want to learn how to cook a fast, healthy, and delicious meal using your favorite ingredients… you get the idea.

My blog was designed with this idea in mind.

I have a regular office job like most people, but I have still managed to get lean while maintaining a busy schedule.  I want to share the techniques I have used to accomplish this.  If they worked for me, I know they will work for others as well.  I also want to dispel common misconceptions about health and fitness by using my experiences as counterexamples.  I know how frustrating it can be to continually put in effort without seeing results.  This happens when you act on information that is either not tailored to your situation or just plain wrong.

This guy must be a pro.

I try to read many different kinds of health and fitness blogs so that I can gain exposure to a wide array of topics and perspectives.

Which blogs do I recommend?  Start by checking out the blogs of people who comment on this site. I use a plugin called CommentLuv that links to the most recent post from the commenter’s blog right below their comment.  There is also a link to the blog’s main page in their username.  I have checked out all of these bloggers’ sites and each one of them puts a unique spin on health and fitness.  Each blogger is a great fitness resource, but you may find one or two that you really like and start visiting those more frequently than others.  Once again, the idea behind all of this is to help people achieve their fitness goals and I believe our network of blogs is doing just that.

Excellent points. I’ve been able to get a lot of insight from “Average Joes” that put everything all the gurus say to shame.

You know, I have been reading the “fitness black book” blog and it has a ton of stuff in it that I have not read anywhere else. Blogs like black book and your blog, Alykhan, are sort of like real time. Reading about your experiences and thoughts motivates me to do more and let’s me know that I am not alone in my fitness journey. Thanks and keep blogging.

Blogging is a really cool outlet for me .. its something that I feel is constructive .. I was spending way too much time on Facebook & twitter and it really meant nothing to me in the end.
Since I started a few months ago I’ve found that blogs are an excellent resource for anything of interest, you are right Bloggers are writing from their own experience …
I follow a few different types e.g fitness, science, MMA, celebrities ( Not Perez Hilton), one of my favourites is on Primatology.
Excellent topic sometimes it just needs to be said or typed ..haha

    Alykhan,
Blogs are definitely a great resource for fitness experiences, especially for the average person. Bodybuilding magazines and even resources like Men’s Health seem a step behind the people who have actually been in the trenches and know what works. It’s blogs like yours that help peel back how to get in shape without dedicating your life to exercise.

    @ Darrin,

Same here. Makes you wonder if the gurus are either just trying to sell something or don’t know as much as we think.

    @ Bryan,

I appreciate the kind words. Fitness Black Book is an excellent blog. Rusty really knows his stuff and he is a great guy all around. Reading FBB is what got me started doing what I’m doing today. I joined your site, by the way. Great work and you’re definitely not alone in this journey. Thanks for reading!

    @ Raymond,

I really enjoy it too. It works both ways. I feel like I can help people by blogging about my experiences and I can also learn a lot by reading about others’ experiences on their blogs. Definitely constructive and very gratifying.

    @ Dave,

I agree. All the time, I see articles in big name fitness magazines preaching how to get ripped in four weeks or something along those lines. At the end of the day, I’m not sure how realistic that advice is for a normal everyday person. If I want to gain the most unbiased knowledge about a product, I prefer to read actual reviews from real users, not the sales pitch. Blogging is a similar concept.

The best thing about getting info from a blog is that it is usually on the cutting edge. If you get a book or magazine, this information may already be outdated. If you follow all of the information from different blogs, you will always be at the forefront of the fitness industry. If something new comes out that works or on the other hand is a scam, (most supplements), it spreads like wild fire.

    @ Kelly,

Great point. This is especially useful in the health and fitness industries where information gets updated constantly. Take the traditional FDA food pyramid suggesting 6-11 servings of grains per day. Completely outdated, not to mention following this recommendation will make it almost impossible for you to shed fat.

    Great post Alykhan

I have recently been so amazed by the amount of great information and motivation that you great bloggers provide. The first great Blog that i stumbled across was Fitness Black Book and from there I have enjoyed many others, including yours which is a great read. I have found that Blogs offer such great cutting edge information compared to the outdated mainstream fitness and health info provided by outlets such as magazines.

I myself, a now fit and healthy 19 year old, have developed a great passion for health and fitness after being overweight for many of my childhood years. I would love to one day share my thoughts, information and views on fitness and health like you. I was just wondering if you could give me just a little bit information on how to start up a Blog of my own one day??? and what goes into running one???

Thanks for all the great info and motivation.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ll read a post on a fitness blog like yours, and it motivates me to do something different, or it spawns a post on my site because it made me think of something I wanted to talk about.

    @ Will,

First of all, thanks for reading. I’m glad that the information I’m putting out there is helping people since that’s what this blog is all about. Fitness Black Book is an excellent blog. Reading it has helped me achieve many of my fitness goals and also inspired me to start my own blog.

As far as advice on starting a blog, I will say that if you are passionate about health and fitness and willing to share your ideas, you are already halfway there. The blog simply serves as an outlet for your knowledge and experiences. I’ve only been doing this for a couple of months, so for technical details, I must refer you to Fitness Blog Training. Rusty Moore, the blogger who runs Fitness Black Book, created this site to teach people who want to run their own fitness blogs exactly what to do in order to build a successful blog.

Rusty covers everything from information for beginners (domain hosting, writing articles, WordPress basics) to more advanced techniques (article spinning, keyword ranking). Bottom line, Fitness Blog Training is the best resource you will ever find for fitness blogging. The best part is that it’s free. Rusty is a great guy for doing this and I know I speak for all the other trainees when I say that his advice and techniques have helped motivate us and get ahead of the game.

    Best of luck to you!

    @ Drew,

I’m with you. I have seen a few people post articles talking about exercises that I’d never even heard of before. Now, these are some of my favorite exercises! It’s great that our network of blogs creates this type of synergistic effect and benefits everyone.

    @ Yavor,

Thanks dude! The networking aspect of blogging is definitely a plus. I’ve also met some really cool people and I’m glad we’re all in this fitness journey together.

    @ Alejandro,

I agree. I like to blog about approaches and programs that I have personally tried and found success with (Eat Stop Eat, Visual Impact, etc.) and I know others do the same. It’s much easier to relay information that you truly believe in.

I totally agree that there is too much information out there about fitness that I often do not know where to even begin. I get what they call analysis paralysis and end up not doing anything or working out at all because I am so flooded with advice that I get information overload.

I think blogs are a great place to start because it is just the average person writing them and getting decent results. I too am sick of seeing all of these endorsements on TV and realizing that the people only achieve those kind of results because all they do is workout all day long.

It is nice to know that there are real people out there achieving their fitness goals even if they do not look like a fitness model. It gives me a realistic goal to work towards.

    @ Mark,

The TV ads are kind of a pet peeve of mine, especially ones for diet pills and such that show these ripped guys. There’s no way they got ripped just from taking the diet pills. Blogs are realistic and can provide much more useful tips and recommendations for the average person.
